FutMon: An integrated project to monitor the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems

The project FutMon is implemented by the majority of European countries. It includes a great number of experimental forest plots in all ecological zones where a multitude of ecological parameters is measured.

More specifically, in the experimental plots the assessed parameters are forest health assessment, identification of damage agents, meteorology, the physical and chemical hydrological cycle, tree growth, the number of dead trees, biodiversity and soil chemistry.
In Greece the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems and Forest Products Technology has installed 4 plots in 4 representative forest ecosystems, evergreen broadleaves, fir, oak and beech.
The information that exists dates back from 1995. So there is a time continuation of data that can be assessed statistically and draw conclusions. The climate change (rise of temperature and carbon dioxide concentration) affects all ecological parameters though not appreciably from year to year. So a long time monitoring activity is needed.
