Object of Laboratory of Environmental Rehabilitation

Object of laboratory is revegetation of disturbed areas mainly after mining exploitations or other activities, such as big constructive works - streets, industrial activity, as well as after forest fires.

The environmental rehabilitation after mining exploitations includes two large work groups:
a) Study of ecological conditions, configuration and reformation of excavation, use of soil ameliorators (sewage sludge, compostes, superabsorbent, fertilizers, etc) and
b) Choice of native at absolute priority species, their evaluation and propagation and choice of appropriate methods for vegetation establishment (e.g. seeding, hydroseeding, plantings of small plants).

Both work groups require special technological equipment and specialized personnel.
The laboratory in the field of applied ecology, where it is activated and specifically in the vegetation's and landscape's reestablishment on disturbed from mining activities regions, has experience that exceeds the 20 years. It has been rendered today the main institution of production of know-how in Greece for the reestablishment of various environments (insular, mountainous, semi mountainious , etc) with important work.
The main fields of specialization concern: the selection of plant species that will be used in the reestablishment after recording all ecological parameters of each region, the study of their biology with accent in seed germination studies, the reproduction and growth of plant species, as well as the growth and trial of methods of reestablishment adapted in the particular, case by case, environmental conditions.
Specifically for the investigation of germination characteristics of seeds from various plant species, in 2008 in the frames of the project "ΑΚΜΩΝ", a Laboratory of Seed Germination was created and runs until now, which is completely equipped and was certified by E.SY.D. (Hellenic Accreditation System S.A.).

Objects of research that have been investigated by the Laboratory of Environmental Reestablishment
"Investigation of the effect of various materials and germination methods in the survival and growth of pseudoaccacia and fir in barren Calcareous spoil materials, without irrigation.of the effect of incorporation in barren Calcareous spoil materials of various quantities of sewage sludge in the survival and growth of black pine.of the effect of various combinations of covering and fixing materials (straw binding with asphalt emulsion, cellulose-glue E 1000, Curasol and combination) in the success of hydroseeding.of the behaviour of 12 herbaceous species in the revegetation of barren materials in different [fyteytiko ypothema] (barren material and barren material mulching with soil) and in different seeding season (spring, autumn).of the effect of irrigation and covering with plastic in the survival of black pine, brutia pine and Mediterranean cypress.of possibility of bush-restorations-reforestations by seeding with forest species.of behaviour of 18 herbaceous species (12 exotic and 6 native) and 3 phryganic species in revegetation of barren spoil materials from betonite exploitations in Milos Island.of behaviour of 18 woody, native and exotics species in Milos Island.of the effect of paper-industry remains and superabsorbent Terrasorb in the survival of black pine, trachea pine and Mediterranean cypress.of effect of surface soil, boxite soil, fertilization, mixture of sewage sludge with and without covering, in the survival and growth of fir and black pine.of behaviour (survival, growth) of 4 trees (fir, black pine, Mediterranean cypress and Juniperus foetidissima) in high altitudes.of behaviour of herbaceous plants in high altitudes and the effect of seeding season.
