LABORATORIES

Laboratory of Silviculture, Forest Genetics and Biotechnology

The field research of the Laboratory of Silviculture, Forest Genetics and Biotechnology are:

  • Conservation and protection of genetic diversity, genetic resources and endangered species.
  • Study of growth and development of forest species.
  • Improvement and selection of species and provenances.
  • Study of physiology and plant molecular genetics.
  • Establishment and study of seed orchard and progeny test (species and provenances).
  • Production of selected and genetically improved clones for reforestation and enhancement of degraded forest ecosystems.
  • Production of propagating material with improved features.
  • Production of propagating material with conventional (cuttings, grafts etc.) and biotechnological (in vitro culture techniques) methods.
  • Production optimization and increase the added value of aromatic and medicinal species.
  • Study of reforestation methods.


Research Projects

Department of Development and Protection of Forests and Natural Environment, Ministry of Rural Development and Food, finance the following research projects:

  • “Genetics and Improvement of conifers”.
  • “Genetics and Improvement of deciduous”.
  • “Production of reproductive material – Seed orchards”.
  • “Research on forest species and reforestation methods”.


General Secretariat of Research and Technology, Ministry of Development, financed the following research projects:

  • “Entrepreneurial production and propagation of ornamental plant clones resistant to frost and drought aiming to new market penetration”, in cooperation with Crocus Flora S.A. and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture and Viticulture, Laboratory of Floriculture.
  • “Molecular and biotechnological approach to exploit the Cretan ladanon [Cistus creticus spp. creticus (L.)”, in cooperation with Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacognosy-Pharmacology, Laboratory of Pharmacognosy.
  • “Development of techniques for mass propagation of Cupressus sp.”, in cooperation with Vioryl S.A.
  • “Study on the industria1 production parameters for Oleander and Bougainvillea dwarfed plant pots, suitable for international market”, in cooperation with Crocus Flora S.A. and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture and Viticulture, Laboratory of Floriculture.
  • “Mass production with biotechnological methods of high commercial interest dwarfed Mediterranean ornamental plants”, in cooperation with Crocus Flora S.A. and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture and Viticulture, Laboratory of Floriculture.
  • “Genetic Modified Plants: establishment, characterization and testing”, in cooperation with Vioryl S.A., Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Greek Sugar Industry S.A.
  • “Collaborative network of research and productive institutions for the development of agricultural biotechnology-AGROBIONET”, in cooperation with Agricultural University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Ioannina, University of Crete, National Technical University of Athens, National and Kapodistrian University Of Athens, Technological Educational Institute of Crete, National Agricultural Research Foundation, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Greek Sugar Industry S.A., Vitro S.A., MicroGrow Ltd. and Spirou S.A.


Important research results are the following:

  • Establishment of seed orchards of black (Pinus nigra Arnold) and aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Miller).
  • Establishment of progeny test of black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold).
  • Establishment of provenances experimental plantings (Pinus nigra Arnold, Pinus radiata D. Don, Pinus muricata D. Don etc.).
  • Improvement of black (Pinus nigra Arnold) and aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Miller) by selection, establishment of seed orchard and progeny tests.
  • Development and application of biotechnological (in vitro culture) and conventional (grafts, cuttings etc.) methods of mass plant material production: Cupressus semperviren, Pinus nigra, Cistus creticus, Origanum vulgare spp hirtum, Origanum majorana, Origanum dictamus, Rosmarinus oficcinalis, Lavandula veta.


Clonal propagation of reproductive material:

Ornamental plants:

  • Cupressus sempervirens, Nerium oleander, Bougainvillea glabra, Myrtus communis, Olea europae, Callistemon sp., Leptospermum scoparium, Punica granatum, Ilex aquifolium Arbutus unedo
  • odoriferous and medicinal plants:
  • Cistus creticus, Origanum vulgare spp hirtum, Origanum majorana, Origanum dictamus, Rosmarinus oficcinalis, Lavandula veta, Thymus sibthorpii.
  • preliminary results of plant propagation by in vitro culture of some odoriferous and medicinal species :
  • Salvia officinalis, Menta piperita, Melissa officinalis, Lippia citriodora.


Studies

The staff of the Laboratory of Silviculture, Forest Genetics and Biotechnology participated (together with the rest of the staff I.M.F.E. & F.P.T.) in writing the following studies:

  • Restoration of the archaeological and broader landscape of Olympia. 2007. NAGREF - Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems and Forest Products Technology, Athens, Greece. 249 p.
  • Restoration of the landscape of the Strofilias - Kaifas forest. 2009. NAGREF - Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems and Forest Products Technology, Athens, Greece. 261 p. plus Appendix.
